These small Neolithic (5th to 2nd millenium B.C.) clay statues are true masterpieces of anthropomorphic art. They represent a man seated on a chair, holding his head in his hands as if thinking of something, and his wife.
Discovered in 1853 in the cemetery on the Sofia Hill near the town of Cernavodπ and Lake Golovi■a, this statuary is highly representative for the Hamangia culture, that has a Balkan origin. Nowadays, the statues are on display in the Archaeology Museum in Constan■a, together with other pottery objects. These are decorated with geometric models and anthropomorphic figures that are typical of Neolithic culture.
